NOTICE INFORMATION

Agency/Office:

National Institutes of Health

Location:

National Institute on Drug Abuse

Title:

3D Printer

Description(s):

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the lead Federal Agency for research on mental illnesses.  The mission of the NIMH is to transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic and clinical research, paving the way for prevention, recovery, and cure.

The mission of the National Institutes of Health, Section on Instrumentation (SI) is to provide comprehensive engineering support for research as required by NIMH, NINDS, and NICHD scientists. The core staff, in collaboration with other researchers at NIH and other academic institutions, develops methodologies and instrumentatin to make research in basic science, and translational research possible. Several such collaborations have yielded excellent data, resulting in the publication of both clinical and research peer-reviewed papers.  SI facility is among a handful of sites in the world with this type of leading-edge setup dedicated to both animal model and human clinical research.

The purpose of this acquisition is to purchase a Object260 Connex3 3D printer or “equal” 3D system to include a trade-in allowance for a Projet 3500 3D printer.  The purchase is required because the additive manufacturing process used in 3D printing is more effective at fabricating these features and reduces the amount of time needed for more complicated design and difficult to machine structures such as internal pockets.

The salient physical, functional, or performance characteristics that “equal” products must meet are specified in the purchase description.
