ARE YOU A CURRENT USVBA MEMBER? Yes

PROFESSIONAL BIO: I retired from IBM after 25 years and had the opportunity to learn about many corporations and how they functioned. I worked as a regional product manager and introduced a product called the AS 400 for the Western Region. After IBM I started my own nonprofit company called California Leading Edge, Inc which is a jobs training and placement company looking for a grant to implement the program to train and place military personnel in living wage jobs with benefits. I am also State Parks Commissioner for the State of California. As state commissioner I set the criteria that the California State Parks use for addressing deferred maintenance. I am the only State Commissioner to sit on 4 ad hoc committees. I chair the climate change committee and the diversity committees, I am on the Washoe Meadows Committee and the Golden Bear Committee which rewards people and organizations for their volunteer contribution in helping to promote state parks. I ran for the California State Senate.

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE: I was a government partnership specialist for the Los Angeles Department of Commerce during the 2000 Decennial. I visited all the cities in Southern California and got all the mayors and city council members to issue a proclamation endorsing the Decennial Census. I visited and did presentations to more than 30 city council meetings and was able to get a proclamation from every city where I did a presentation. In 2010 I went back to the Department of Commerce as a Partnership Coordinator. I hired and trained more than 100 partnership specialist to educate the public, I helped to write the plan of action for the Los Angeles Region. I hired people who spoke more than 49 different languages to assist the Los Angeles Region reach the hard to count communities and in 2010 we had the best Decennial Census Count in the Los Angeles Region’s history. I have worked with corporation, nonprofit organizations, federal, local and state governments as well as tribal governments. As a California State Commissioner I give directions to the State Parks staff as to how monies are to be spent, approve of general plans and have them altered if necessary. I work closely with the Director to make sure that the commissioner and her staff are on board with the commissioner’s outreach to the under served communities.

WHY ARE YOU INTERESTED IN JOINING THE USVBA BODS? I am a disabled veteran with an honorable discharge who is trying to help my fellow veterans maintain a viable standard of living once they leave the military. I was fortunate enough to get a good job and start a business however I realize how difficult it has been for me. I see and talk to veterans about what they want to do and they tell me how difficult it is not to just adjust to civilian life but how difficult it is to make ends meet. Every time I hear about a veteran committing suicide I cringe and I considered all of the conversations I have had with them and they have confided in me what they would like since they are no longer in the military. The two most pressing issues are jobs and medical care. This is how I came up with the nonprofit company that I am trying to get funded. This jobs training and placement program will address these two issues. Meanwhile as a USVBA BOD I can continue to get the message out to politician and corporations on how important it is to address these issues for our returning heroes.

AREA(S) OF EXPERTISE/CONTRIBUTION YOU FEEL YOU CAN MAKE: I feel comfortable talking to and working with anyone at any time and at any place as long as it is productive. I have experience in corporate board rooms, I have experience talking to and addressing political boards, I have experience working with different community and religious groups. I can put a power point presentation together to address any situation or need that is necessary and I can do a great job in presenting it with confidence.
